Grids

In the past decade I believe that escaping boundaries has become essential to most graphics, whether they are movie posters of magazine covers. Nearly half the magazines in print today put the title of their publication in the background, with images stacked in front of part of it. Also, it is rare to read a feature story without seeing at least one pull quote. It's a simple was to break up a design without detracting from the story, and though everyone tends to do it, it is a practice that has yet to tire and i doubt it will, as it makes any story look better without doing any real work at all.

I find the magazine page to the right to be quite attention grabbing. It is a great use of white space, as everyone can clearly see the image create a light bulb. The byline is even the bottom of the bulb. The page is in another language and yet i can still take a good guess on what the article is about (energy, electricity). This was certainly a creative leap, as the created image in takes up a lot of space, but it definitely paid off.
