Gestalt Principle

The Gestalt Principle deals with the structure of an ad, poster, etc. I chose this first ad, because I was drawn to the simplicity. At first glance, you can see the word Tommy written three times down the page. From this, one is already able to guess that this is for the broadway play called Tommy. This similarity of text brings the reader down the page as they continue to follow the words. The text and shape of the word Tommy is what allows the poster to be recognizable. The text inside of Tommy, which I'm guessing has some sort of relevance to the play, leads you into the "Y" of the third Tommy. Furthermore, the red used in the text leads the eye to the red text surrounding the final Tommy.

I was drawn to this next ad because of the trumpet. The use of grounding allows the trumpet to lead you down the page, while filling in letters for "Save the Music." This poster is simple. The use of simplicity is what makes it appealing. I was drawn in by the use of the cool green, which is also used in the VH1 logo. The simple statement becomes the focus of the advertisement, because the trumpet leads you into the message and down the page.
