Design Strategy:
Because I knew that the Vera House and the White Ribbon Campaign was a serious event, I didn’t want anything to playful in my design. I wanted a poster that was very readable and effective. I had photographed the event last year, so I knew that I had images that I could use for the poster. I used an image of a ribbon tied on a tree, and then photo-shopped the background out of the image so that just the tree was remaining. This worked nicely with my design, because I was able to put my information at certain points next to the ribbon. The Vera House went next to the middle of the ribbon, and the extra information was placed at the end of the ribbon.
Choice of Typefaces:
I used two fonts in my design, Angelina, and Geosans light. These typefaces went well together because Angelina was a little bit looser, and Geosans light was very simple to read. I was drawn to Geosans light because of the rounded counters and strong readability. Angelina worked well with my header because while it was still easy to read, it wasn’t quite as rigid as Geosans light.
Color:
The blue background is Pantone 292C at 75%. The other colors are paper and black at 100%, and the remaining color is C19, M83, Y59, and K8. I chose the blue for the background because for a couple reasons. It reminded me of a sky on a nice day, which went with the image of the tree, and it is also a very gender neutral color. The white was used for the white ribbon campaign because of the name of the campaign, and Vera House, simple, and tie your ribbon were done in the warmer color because I wanted to draw attention to them. I also used the Vera House logo, but I left the colors as they were.
I really like the visual that you chose for your poster. The image is simple, yet very strong. When I look at the poster the visual makes me curious and want to read on to find out what it's advertising. The placement of the visual on the left of the poster also helps lead the viewers eye towards the type. The two fonts you chose work well together and provide contrast. Your choice of colors work well and let the ribbon stand out of the page, but yet the text is not overpowered.
