When first presented with this project, my first thought was to make a poster for an event through the Michigan Humane Society called the Mutt March, but I felt that events involving dogs seemed to be overly popular choices, so I went for another option. I then decided to make a poster for “The Chair Affair”, an event put on by the Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan, which collects gently used furniture to help create safe, healthy, and comfortable home environments for families in poverty in the area. The furniture bank focuses on encouraging steady employment and self-sufficiency for the families it helps, which is what gave me the main idea for my poster. I decided to create a chair made of words in different typefaces that represent some things that a comfortable, furnished home could mean to very poor families who otherwise would have nothing. Although my poster is fairly plain, I think that the central graphic says a lot about what the non-profit wants to accomplish with the money raised at this event
For my central graphic I used several different typefaces, which I chose based on readability. I wanted the words in the chair to be easily readable so that my point was very clear. I used whatever typefaces were available in Illustrator’s basic library. For my headline and event information I used Monoline Script MT Std. I chose this typeface because I wanted to give the poster a sophisticated look since the event is formal. I like the way that the letters are connected because it gives the look of handwritten cursive. I also loved the curl on the capital “c” in “Chair”. It gave the event title a nice touch.
I chose a soft yellow color (C=0 M=2 Y=50 K=0) because it is bright but not overly shocking. I think it is an appealing color that will easily get the attention of people passing by, and its also calming. I think that the almost pastel-like color gives the poster a high-class look as well.
